Eating Disorders 

Eating disorders -- such as anorexia, bulimia, and binge eating disorder – include extreme emotions, attitudes, and behaviors surrounding weight and food issues. Eating disorders are serious emotional and physical problems that can have life-threatening consequences for females and males.


Facts about eating disorders...

  • At least 30 million Americans suffer from an eating disorder in their lifetime.

  • Eating disorders do not discriminate- male, female, young and old, all econonmic classes/race ethnicities are affected.

  • Eating disorders have the highest mortality rate of all mental illnesses. Even for those whose eating disorder does not end their life, eating disoders can lead to severe medical complications.  

  • Eating disorders are not a choice. They are complex mental illnesses that are biologically based and influenced by a variety of sociological and environmental factors. 

  • Recovery is a choice. Full recovery is possible.


Eating Disorder Treatment includes...

  • Individual, family, and group therapy

  • A treatment team that usually consists of an eating disorder trained therapist, registered dietitian, medical doctor, and oftetimes a psychiarist

  • Treament for an eating disorder should be tailored to fit the specific needs of the individual and the type and intensity of treatment should match the severity of the eating disorder
